Environmental, Health & Safety Policy & Programs

Environmental, Health and Safety Objectives

  • To operate our processes with minimum environmental impact and occupational health and safety hazards by adopting best available technologies, compliance of relevant legislation and highest standard of safe practices.
  • To continue to evaluate, review and improve our performance in environment, health and safety practices.
  • To implement comprehensive programs to prevent potential occupational risk and reduce negative impact to the environment.

STATS ChipPAC's Long Term Environmental, Health and Safety Goals

10 year goal from 2009 to 2018:
  • Reduce energy consumption / CO2 emission per unit by 30% using 2008 as baseline
  • Re-use / recycle >20% of water purchased
  • Recycle >70% of hazardous and non-hazardous waste generated
  • Achieve world-class safety performance in terms of accident frequency and severity rate lower than industry benchmark
◊   2010 Electronic Product Benchmark (Source:  Ministry of Manpower, Singapore) per million man-hours worked:
              - Accident frequency rate (FR) = 0.7
              - Accident severity rate (SR) = 10

Key EHS Programs and Achievements in 2013

In 2013, STATS ChipPAC implemented key environmental, health and safety programs and initiatives.

Achieved 15% Scope 1 & 2 energy reduction (equivalent to 14% reduction in CO2 emissions [tonnes] / K-units) compared to 2008 baseline through Energy Conservation Programs (2013 Goal: 17.5% reduction)
  • Spare VFD and non purge dryer installation
  • Voltage reduction, fluorescent lamp brightness adjustment
  • Cooling air and water recovery
  • Heat recovery from hot DI water
  • Power saving during peak time and temperature optimization
  • Chiller and compressor overhaul
  • Managed manufacturing equipment to high utilization with cold and warm shutdowns

Achieved 26% water reduction/recycling through Water Conservation Programs (2013 Goal: 25% reduction/recycling)
  • E-Cell reject water diversion to NEWater tank
  • Use of waste water recycling system
  • Use of recycled water in many manufacturing processes

Achieved 78% waste recycling through Waste Recycling Programs (2013 Goal: 75% recycling)
  • Scrap mold compound, living sludge and canteen waste inclusion in recyclable waste
  • Solid waste management training
  • Use of waste recycling system
  • Promoted and adopted '3Rs' policy

Achieved 0.3 Accident Frequency Rate (FR) and 0.5 Accident Severity Rate (SR) through Safety Programs (2013 Goal: 0.7 Frequency Rate; 10 Severity Rate)
  • Safety audit and training on fire extinguisher operation, fire control, first aid, risk and hazardous substance management, PPE
  • Workplace safety and machine guarding inspection, hazard risk assessment
  • Drills on chemical spillage response, evacuation, fire control, hazardous substances
  • X-ray machine and chemical handling operator re-certification
  • OHSAS certification audit
  • Occupational health check-up and building hazardous monitor

EICC Awareness Training
  • All employees are required to complete EICC awareness training; this resulted in more than 4900 training hours
